Step 2
Add Base
Evenly spread 3 inches of class 2 road base (or similar) where you will be installing your artificial grass. The class 2 road base will make it easy to create a level platform with proper drainage. In most cases, we recommend using gopher wire and weed barrier to prevent vegetation and pests from sprouting through your new yard.
Step 3
Lay Turf
Roll out your new artificial grass, taking care not to drag it across your freshly prepared base. Allow the turf to sit in the sun for 30 minutes to an hour to let it expand prior to installation. Ensure that the blade direction and stitch patterns are facing the same way when working with multiple rolls to avoid a poor appearance. Use knee pads to protect your knees and shins while moving the turf into position, and consider using a carpet kicker to stretch and maneuver the turf effectively.
Step 4
Cut to Fit
Now it's time to make the appropriate cuts. Use a box cutter or carpet knife, cutting from the back of the synthetic grass to see the stitch rows. Leave 1/4’’ to 1/2’’ of turf over the edge of your border for a clean finish. If you're working with multiple pieces, secure seams with seam tape and glue, ensuring blades lay in the same direction and the space between each stitch row matches. Place the red line of your seam tape down the center of the seam, make an “S” pattern with your glue on each side of the red line, then move the turf into place and let the glue set for 15 minutes.
Step 5
Secure The Perimeter
Time to secure your artificial grass to the ground. Start by tucking the 1/4’’ to 1/2’’ edge you left into the border with a metal putty knife and hammer. We recommend using 40-D 5’’ non-galvanized turf nails or staples placed every 6 inches along the outside perimeter. Be sure to reinforce your seamed areas with a few nails or staples.
Step 6
Spread Infill
Meeting the proper infill requirements for your turf system is crucial for its appearance, performance, and lifespan. If you're unsure about the requirements for your specific product, please ask your sales rep for guidance. There are various types of appropriate infills, such as Acrylic Coated Sand, Zeolite, Silica Sand, or Crumb Rubber, and we recommend using a drop spreader for even dispersal.
Step 7
Brush Infill
Once the infill is in place, use a power broom or stiff-bristled broom to brush the turf. This helps the turf blades stand upright, giving your artificial lawn a freshly mowed look. Repeat until the infill is spread evenly and seams disappear. Brushing the turf blades will be your only quarterly maintenance, along with proper sanitation for pet owners. Lastly, rinse the grass to remove any remaining dust and infill.
